Program Outline:  Essential English for Health Care (EEHC)

This program is designed to assist newcomers to Canada in gaining the English communication skills they need for successful careers in the health care industry by providing exposure to Essential Skill requirements relevant to health care occupations and a context in which to develop these skills.  This program will help provide much needed qualified applicants for BC health care training programs and prepare new workers for the BC health care system.   Feature:  EEHC uses the Canadian Language Benchmarks system as entry and exit standards for its modules.  The program is also structured to include the core job skill complexity development of the Essential Skills (ES).

Program Length:  EEHC includes four modules.  Each is 12 weeks in length.  Students may take only as many modules as is required to achieve their health care training program prerequisite, or higher level if ultimate career goal requires a higher level.

Prerequisites:  Applicants must possess the academic requirements necessary for their occupational training goal.  English language skills must be a minimum of CLB 4 all skills to gain admission.

Program Description:  EEHC is a four-module program for development of English language proficiency and Essential Skill competencies within a health care context.  Each module includes two components (Listen/Speak and Read/Write), enabling both part and full time participation as well as placement in a mixed module term, based on demonstrated English strengths and weaknesses.  This program will prepare learners to qualify for admission to a variety of health care occupational training programs, including:

  • Resident Care Aide
  • Medical Laboratory Assistant
  • Sterile Processing Technician
  • Unit Clerk/Medical Office Assistant

Delivery Methods:  Communicative language teaching methods (all skills), demonstration, field trips, multimedia.

Student Evaluation:  Students will be graded throughout each module, using a variety of approaches that focus on student demonstration of relevant skills.

Grading System:  Evaluation is based on a numeric percentage system.  Learners must achieve a minimum of 75% overall in each component to advance.

Student Responsibilities: As listed in the P3C Academic Policies

Learning Resources:  Each EEHC module has assigned resources.  Please see the EEHC Resource List for full details of books, supplies and learning resources.
